Hi, my name is Kimberly Dean and this blog is for my class on Principles of Distance Learning. I am currently enrolled at Walden University in my Ed.S program for Educational Technology. Please feel free to comment.
Innovation The innovation I chose from the three examples in my previous paper is the interactive whiteboard. As for now, I will call them Smart Boards because this is what we have in our district. The potential use for the Smart Board is amazing. Inside the software for the Smart Board, which is called Notebook, there are lessons already made by subject areas. There are literally thousands of manipulatives that can be used with any subject area. Out on the internet there are, again, literally thousands of websites to choose lesson plans from. Some of these lesson plans are even aligned with the state standards. The notebook software is very user friendly and can even upload power points that have already been made by teachers and make them interactive with the lesson. The one benefit of the interactive white board is that students want to go and write on the board. They love going to the board to manipulate objects on the screen in all subjects available, but especially in science and mathematics. Lessons for teachers can be saved and tweaked for year after year use or until the standards are changed again. The most advantageous way this technological device can help save teachers time and energy is that once they find a lesson, they are able to make it their own or align it with their specified standards. Why bother baking a cake from memory when you have already been given the recipe and ingredients? The teachers are able to tweak these lessons and make them their own consequently saving them forever. The main reason I chose the Smart Board over the internet, the projector, and the Mobi is that the students with whom I have worked with using a Smart Board absolutely love it. They are much more engaged, and students want to go to the board and work a math problem. I have seen students who will not even raise their hands in class want to go and work on the board. For me, this is a huge step forward. Our kids that we are teaching now will remember the iPhone, one of the most influential pieces of technology our generation has seen, as being rendered insignificant by future advances. Like the Nintendo Wii, Microsoft X-Box, and Sony PS3, students are drawn to technology by gaming. The Smart Board is another game system which can be used to teach them as well as entertain them. Again, the reason I did not choose projectors would be that in order to use a Smart Board you have to have a projector. The World Wide Web is just another tool that can be used with the Smart Board. The Mobi’s are just now coming into their own and I feel we will have a better grasp on their concept and use in the classroom in a year or two. The one diffusion study I chose was from Whitney High School in Cerritos, California (Ziolkowski, 2004). The title was Interactive Whiteboards: Impacting Teaching and Learning. The school has 1,050 students and 35 teachers. They also have 15 Smart Boards. The teachers have learned to integrate these Smart Boards and their lessons together, to take their students deeper into their studies, and not just assign worksheets. The students are taking part and helping to be responsible for their own learning. The teachers are not only using the Smart Boards as lesson makers but they can become interactive with World Wide Web. They can show dvd clips or educational videos such as from Learn 360, which our district has a prescription again. The videos can be show on the Smart Board and paused and written on and such. The interactive white board can bring the world into your classroom and while doing that, can help our students to be technology savvy for the real world. The students are very comfortable with this type of learning, so it should make their educational learning easier also.
