Assessing Collaborative Efforts

How should participation in a collaborative learning community be assessed? How do the varying levels of skill and knowledge students bring to a course affect the instructor's fair and equitable assessment" of learning?

I, as a teacher am all for students working together, but when it comes to assessing them as a group, sometimes it is not fair. Some students work and some do not. I feel that it is best to let the students assess each other. That way you can get a better view of who worked and who did not. Because as non traditional students and working on an online course, it is not easy for the instructor to have a fair and equitable assessment of each students learning. So again,I would say have each student fill out a rubric of the other students in their groups involvement and work ethic and participation.

If a student does not want to network or collaborate in a learning community for an online course, what should the other members of the learning community do" What role should the instructor play? What impact would this have on his or her assessment plan?

At some point in our lives no matter what type of job we do, we are going to have to work with other people collaboratively in a group. We might as well learn to do it now more so than later. The other members should also not be punished because one student does not want to work as a team. There are people who work much better on their own, but they also need to to learn to work with other people in a team like setting. This is just part of the world and work ethic. This should have an impact on the instructors assessment plan, maybe not a huge one, but it should have some affect on the students grade as higher education learning is not just learning in itself it is learning different types of learning.

  1. Kim I agree with you students need to start working together now, but I run into the problem of having a child with a very high IQ who does not want to work with anyone. Yes, she can do all the work herself, but I want her to learn to work in a team. What do I do to get this child to work with her team members?

Also, do you feel that everyone on the team should get the same grade, because some of the students will give them a good grade when they did not do anything?

  2. Lou has a good point that assessing groups is very challenging. I think that there has to be an element in the collaborative environment of individual contribution. There has to be a way that an individual still can be graded on their contributions so the group will not suffer for a lack of participation. What are your thoughts?
